Each year, certain employers are required to file Employer Information, or EEO-1, Reports with the federal government. For many years, these reports have requested information on employees’ race, ethnicity, gender, and job categories in an effort to combat employment discrimination. Beginning in 2018, however, the reporting requirements will expand to include data on wages and hours worked.
Here are a few details on these new requirements:
They will encompass private sector businesses and federal government contractors with 100 or more employees.
The deadline for reporting 2017 data will be March 31, 2018, which represents an extension from the usual annual deadline of September 30.
The information must be based on W-2 wage data from a “workforce snapshot period” between October 1 and December 31, 2017.
Data must be reported for part-time and full-time workers, although the requirements may vary based on an employee’s status as exempt or non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Employers must tally the number of employees—and indicate their race, ethnicity, and sex—for each of the 12 EEO-1 pay bands and each of the 10 job categories.
Employers will have to update their recordkeeping and reporting systems in order to capture the data needed for these new requirements.
